Huntsman Cancer Institute relies on the generosity of the community. We need Foundation donors like you to help create a place for healing and hope. Your gift to Huntsman Cancer Foundation helps us provide for the mission of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, which is to understand cancer from its beginnings, to use that knowledge in the creation and impartment of cancer treatments, to relieve the suffering of cancer patients, and to educate the public about cancer risk, prevention, and care.
Hope Through Research
The scientists at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) focus on understanding cancer from its very beginnings and on translating this knowledge to safer and more effective treatments. Specialists work in cancer-specific teams to ensure that each patient benefits from the most current understanding of science and bedside care.
• Our research scientists study genetic and molecular changes—the earliest events that lead to cancer.
• Specialized research clinics identify, study, and educate families with inherited predispositions to breast or colon cancer or melanoma.
• Clinical trials bring promising new therapies to qualifying patients.
• HCI is the steward of the Utah Population Database (UPDB), the world’s most comprehensive population database. Using this powerful tool, HCI researchers study cancer patterns and identify new cancer-causing gene mutations.
Hope Through Education
HCI offers patients and the general public information about specific cancers, treatments, cancer risk factors, and prevention and screening guidelines.
• Huntsman Cancer Learning Center has one of the most extensive collections of cancer-related materials in the United States.
• The Huntsman Online Patient Education (HOPE) Guide is a web-based tool that provides cancer patients and their loved ones, as well as the general public, access to a collection of resources and documents about cancer.
• Huntsman Cancer Information Service is a toll-free telephone service staffed by cancer information specialists who provide accurate, personalized information on all aspects of cancer.
• Cancer Education Outreach Programs provide presentations to public groups upon request. Subject matter includes nutrition and cancer prevention; the general biology and development of cancer; prevention strategies; cancer’s warning signs; cancer screening and early detection of breast and cervical cancer; skin cancer prevention and early detection; tobacco cessation; and an overview of HCI’s programs and services.
Hope Through Care
HCI provides inpatient and outpatient care for all forms of adult cancer. Disease-specific teams of health care professionals work together to provide the best patient care.
• People with all types of cancer are treated in HCI’s outpatient clinics. Treatment can include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, small surgical procedures, diagnostic procedures, and second opinions.
• Patients requiring hospitalization are admitted to the 50-bed Huntsman Cancer Hospital, adjacent to HCI.
• HCI is a center for cutting-edge cancer research including the largest genetic database in the world.
• HCI’s approach to fighting the war on cancer is three-fold: 1) research into the fundamental causes of cancer, particularly genetics; 2) team approach that features physicians and researchers working side-by-side to treat specific types of cancer; and 3) an outreach program that educates patients, families, and the public.
• HCI is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a 20-member alliance of the world’s leading cancer centers located throughout the United States.
• HCI holds Cancer Center designation by the National Cancer Institute.
• HCI operates several high-risk clinics that focus on breast cancer, colon cancer, and melanoma. HCI treats patients with all forms of cancer.
• HCI meets the highest national standard for cancer care, utilizing an interdisciplinary approach that includes treatment, genetic counseling, educational resources, and pain and palliative care.
• The HCI Cancer Learning Center for patient and public education contains one of the nation’s largest collections of cancer-related publications.
• The HCI Center for Children is a unique collaborative effort utilizing basic and clinical research to develop new standards for childhood cancer treatment.
Center for Children
What is HCI's Center for Children?
The Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) Center for Children is a collaboration between Huntsman Cancer Institute, Primary Children’s Medical Center, and various departments at the University of Utah. This union utilizes basic and clinical research to develop new treatments for childhood cancer.
Approach to Treatment
• The HCI Center for Children combines the forces of researchers, educators, and pediatricians to provide a comprehensive program.
• Research teams focus on understanding cell growth and organ development in children and how abnormalities lead to cancer.
• Teams of specialists convert scientific discoveries into practical applications for treatment and prevention.
• Teams of health care professionals assure the best therapy is provided to children in facilities devoted to their special needs.
Specialty Clinics
• The HCI Center for Children assists in the operation of specialty clinics located in Primary Children’s Medical Center.
• A multidisciplinary team meets regularly to discuss new cases, plan therapy, and supervise treatment plans for patients.
• The clinics are organized into three teams dedicated to the treatment of high-risk tumors: neuro-oncology, high-risk leukemia, and advanced sarcomas.
The Huntsman Cup Regatta may just seem like a day of sailing. However, it is so much more than that to us. By participating as a fund raising boat, you will assist HCI in support of our mission.
Where Do I Begin?
As a Huntsman Cup participant, you have made a commitment to help HCI in its fight to against Cancer
If you truly believe and understand the critical importance of what you are doing and why you are doing it, fund raising will be simple and will give you a great deal of personal satisfaction… guaranteed! Whether you do it in honor of a survivor or in memory of a loved one, fundraising for the Regatta lifts the sail of hope for future cures.
Here are some helpful tips on becoming a successful Huntsman Cup Regatta fundraiser:
Develop an understanding how the donations you secure help make a difference
Communicate the success that HCI has achieved…spread the good news! Materials in the packet provide valuable information to help you communicate this to potential donors.
Provide assurance to donors that all contributions will be used 100% by HCI in the fight against cancer. HCI does not use any of these contributions to pay for fund raising expenses but rather has a separate endowment for those costs. !00% of the funds raised will be used locally by HCI
Make a commitment to everyone: friends, family, co-workers, your fellow school alums (get a mailing list from your Class Rep), your cable company, others with whom you do business. Anyone you can think of to join you in supporting the life saving work of HCI for local patients. The worst they can do is say no. But, you won’t know until you ask.
Spread your (fishing) net even further! Don’t ask just those you know. There are more than 747,000 patients in the U.S. battling these diseases, so the more people you ask, the better the chance you’ll reach someone touched by leukemia or its related cancers in their family or circle of friends. If you work for a company with branch offices, send a letter to each branch. If you can get a directory of employees, a note to each is even better. Hold a garage sale so strangers can even become part of your donor circle.
Thank your donors in a heartfelt and timely fashion. You may want to wait until you have collected all funds and let them know what your overall total was.
Fundraising donations can be turned in prior to the Regatta weekend by mailing them to HCI attn Ray Olson 500 Huntsman Way

Fund Raising Tips
The list below represents some simple ways to raise funds. You will be surprised how well they work! .
1. Letter Writing Campaign: One of the very best ways to raise donations is to put your request in writing. Send letters to everyone you know, corporate contacts, business associates, friends, family, your phone company…anyone you can think of. Enclosing a self addressed stamped envelope will help you get more donations quicker!! See sample letter in this packet.
2. Personal Solicitation: Many of us spend a good deal of time on the phone making contacts every day. Why not take the opportunity to ask for a donation next time you are talking to someone? The most important thing to remember is that you are asking them to donate to charity, not to you, and most people are willing to contribute at least a small amount for a good cause.
3. Corporate Matching Gifts: Many corporations have generous matching gift programs. Corporations will often match gifts given by you or other employees. This is a great way to double and sometimes triple your fund raising efforts. Contact your Human Resources Department for more information.
Tax Deductible Donations
All donations made directly to your fundraising campaign are tax-deductible. Checks should be made payable to Huntsman Cancer foundation. The contributor’s canceled check is their receipt. Receipts for cash can be mailed to your donor from our office. Also, credit cards are acceptable. Provide us with the kind of card, its number and expiration date, and the name as it appears on the card, and we will process it from our office.
GOOD LUCK!!
Thank you for participating as a fundraiser for
Huntsman Cup Regatta…every dollar helps!!
SAMPLE LETTER
Dear Friend,
On Memorial Day weekend, 2008, I will be joining local sailors as we hoist our sails for a great cause, the Huntsman Cup Regatta which benefits The Huntsman Cancer Institute. The Bear Lake Yacht Club will host our event.
The Huntsman Cup Regatta features challenging racing amongst local sailors. Fundraising and sailing awards will be presented to all top fundraisers and sailors.
I am inviting you to help me “raise more than a sail” on this special day. Over the next few weeks, my crew and I will be asking for financial support from friends, family members, and business associates to help us reach our goal of being the Top Fund Raising Boat. You can help all who sail aboard (your boat’s name here) by making a tax-deductible contribution to our campaign to claim the Cup. We will have a special crewmember in our thoughts that day.
